Course 1

Examples, conception and design of Augmented Reality applications in the cultural sector

This course offers a first introduction to the complex field of augmented reality (AR). It stretches over a day and is divided into two parts.
The first part emphasizes the imparting of basic knowledge and meaningful examples: We look at the art-historical context of this young technology and discuss current AR applications within artistic expression. The program also includes an overview of the hardware and software required and a clarification of important terminology from AR programming.
The second part focuses on the analogous development and design of AR applications in the creative sector. In small groups or single-handedly we formulate and visualize ideas, discuss them and develop the prototypes further. A final presentation will be an opportunity to talk to the project staff about the creation of missing content and the potential of a technical implementation. The following courses are linked to both points.
This training is a basic course that requires no prior knowledge. Own project ideas and materials can be brought along but are not a requirement!

Course 2

Introduction to the production of augmented reality applications without programming

For one day, this training is about the production of AR applications using the software Unity and Vuforia. First, basic questions are clarified: What is Unity doing and what is Vuforia actually serving for? How do the two software play together in the AR experience? You will be introduced to the usage and possibilities of the Unity Editor, which is the central tool in the AR app development. With the support of AR specialists, you will develop your first simple AR applications with your own animations step-by-step! The training finally brings you to the limit, where the scripts and thus the programming for a more individual AR app development would come into play. And at this point, the following training will continue …

Course 3

Production of augmented reality applications with programming

More complex ideas for AR apps can be implemented only by scripts and thus by the own programming. As in the previous course, this training mainly works with the Unity editor, but now it goes one step further: First, you will be introduced to the matter using the visual programming language “Scratch”: We will explain basic programming concepts such as variables, simple data types and methods that you internalize again and again through exercises.
Then we transfer that new knowledge to the C # programming language that underlies Unity. You will also learn programming specifics with Unity and the advanced use of the Unity editor to customize AR apps. And because you want to extend your marker not just to a virtual cube, but to your own digital content, followed a few weeks later, the training for digital media production …
This training requires knowledge of the Unity editor. We recommend that you bring your own project ideas and materials, but they are not a requirement.

Course 4

Digital media production (animation, audio, video, 3D) and AR process management

In addition to a good application and interaction concept stands and falls an AR application with its media content! For nearly two days, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in digital media production for AR apps with video artist Dagmar Schürrer. You will get an introduction to the basics of video editing with Premiere, the compositing and 2D- animation with After Effects, and 3D modeling, texturing and animation with Blender.
At the end of a successful AR development, your app must finally be on the smartphone, it must be successfully tested, published in the popular stores and regularly maintained. These and other concluding steps and considerations will be discussed at the end of the second day of this further education and will be followed in a practice-oriented way.
Equipped with this, you can start or continue working on your AR app development in the advanced training “AR Production Lab” …
This training is a basic course that requires no prior knowledge.

Course 5

AR production lab

After you have acquired the most important theoretical knowledge about AR-App development and have already tried AR-app development in the previous courses, you can go in the “AR Production Lab” and with our help, apply your knowledge. In this training, there will be no more frontal lectures, but you advance your AR development through conversations with us and other participants.
In the “AR Production Lab” you get a very good idea of the working method in the AURORA production lab, in which five places for the further development of the best AR app ideas are available.
To attend the AR Production Lab, knowledge from the previous courses is required. We recommend that you bring your own project ideas and materials, but they are not a requirement.
