SIGNAL

Official Name: SIGNAL – Sensoren, interaktive, positions- und kontextsensitive Dienste, GreenIT – Nachhaltigkeit und Langzeiteffizienz
Homepage: http://signal.htw-berlin.de/
Project Duration: 01.11.2011 - 30.06.2015
Funding: EFRE

The project SIGNAL is divided into four sub-projects:

  • Media, Museums, Culture, Green IT & Interactive Services
  • Energy efficiency and renewable energies
  • sensor systems and close range communication
  • position & context aware services

The prototypes which had been developed within the framework of the project will be demonstrated, tested and evaluated in two labs (indoor and outdoor) that are going to be established. Therefor they can be considered for comparative studies. Here the focus is on applications for spaces that are open to the public like museums, libraries, hospitals, fairs, exhibitions, universities and public urban spaces.

The sub-project „Media, Museums, Culture, Green IT & Interactive Services“ concentrates on studying and developing energy-efficient, resource-friendly and sustainable solutions for information and communication technology. Working with photovoltaics has a special significance for resource-friendly running of interactive media-veneers and for the development of interactive services used for controlling of information technology and management utilities in cultural industries. This is combined with the research on renewable energy and strategies for energy efficiency. The main aspect will be the research on and development of techniques for efficient and optimized production as well as utilization of renewable energies.

In this context the sub-project „sensor systems and close range communication“ has a special meaning. These are the focal points in the development of usage scenarios for controlling of ICT-components. Focusing on the development of ways for controlling media-veneers by sensor systems and close range communication as well as implementing and running a „GreenIT“ lab located on the Campus Wilheminenhof with special regards to photovoltaic.

The „position and context aware services“ project’s goal is researching and developing applications in the cultural industry as examples for many other sectors. Besides the development of methods and technologies comprehensive research on preservation of privacy and balancing between public sphere and anonymity are inevitable for services that deal with the user’s position and preferences. Here the main aspect covers the development of components for identifying position and contexts regarding re-usable modular-design systems for sustainable utilization in museums and cultural institutions.
To guarantee sustainability within the framework there will be a special focus on research of ICT solutions‘ long-term use and archival storage as well as their economic and social effects. Therefor interdisciplinary cooperations exist which research interdependencies between ICT solutions and economical and social processes.
